Mission Statement

The Department of Dermatology’s mission is threefold:

Patient Care

To provide the highest quality, state-of-the-art, comprehensive care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.
To provide a full range of health care services aimed at preventing dermatologic disease and maintaining healthy skin.
To offer ready and convenient access to the clinical services we provide in a manner that is responsive to the needs of our patients and referring physicians.

Teaching

To educate and train residents to deliver superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.
To impart to all trainees (students, residents, and fellows) a thoughtful and scholarly approach to normal skin physiology and to the diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous disease.
To educate all trainees in the principles of clinical and basic scientific investigation as they relate to the understanding of the structure and function of normal skin and the pathophysiology of skin disease.
To educate all trainees in the art of teaching so that they may continue to impart their knowledge of dermatology to future trainees.

Research

To develop and maintain innovative research programs contributing to the understanding of the biology of normal and diseased skin, and the development of novel skin-based therapies for cutaneous and systemic diseases.
To integrate existing interdisciplinary research efforts in the areas of cutaneous biology and skin disease, promoting cooperative interactions to enrich the effectiveness of ongoing research efforts and to stimulate the development of new collaborative initiatives.
To utilize departmental and institutional strengths, focusing research efforts currently existing outside of traditional dermatology departmental boundaries to current issues in cutaneous biology and the development of novel skin-based therapies.
